Private Lessons
I teach private violin lessons, approaching music education with a core belief that every person can learn to play music, and that the positive impact and skills learned through a music education can reach far beyond lessons and practice sessions. Through my teaching program, students learn classical technique and repertoire from the Suzuki method and learn how to apply these skills to all kinds of music they wish to explore, whether classical, jazz, folk, original compositions, improvisation, or a combination. A primary goal in my teaching is to support students in developing their violin skills to be able to play music with other people - one of my very favorite things to do!
In addition to guiding students through the core classical program of technique and repertoire, students are asked to listen to music from a wide range of composers, cultures, places, and time periods (one “special listening” piece per week) and share, in our lesson, a little bit about the piece or tune they listened to. Regularly listening to music strengthens our pitch and rhythm training, expands our knowledge and understanding of music, composers, and communities in which the music is rooted, observe artistic expression and interpretations by different performers, and helps us identify our goals as musicians.
